The Saint and the Sultan: Models for Peacebuilding
with Professor Paul Moses

In the violent era of the Fifth Crusade, Francis of Assisi recovered the Christian traditions of non-violence and of befriending enemies.  At the same time, Egypt’s Sultan Malik al-Kamil’s respect for Francis in the midst of the Crusade exemplified a Muslim tradition of reverence toward holy Christians.  Nearly 800 years after their encounter, Paul Moses posits it as a model for Muslim-Christian relations today.

Paul Moses will be joined by Dr. Nevin Reda, who will be providing a Muslim perspective on the issue.

Paul Moses is a journalist and a professor of journalism at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for 17 years at Newsday in New York City, serving as senior religion writer, City Hall bureau chief and city editor.  Most recently, he is the author of ‘The Saint & The Sultan: The Crusades, Islam & Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace(signed copies will be available for purchase).

Dr. Nevin Reda is an Assistant Professor of Muslim Studies at University of Toronto’s Emmanuel College.
